MARKET...MONTH 8

Hello everyone,

I hope you are enjoying yourself where ever you may be in the world.  In Melbourne we are currently entering into wonderful Spring and I think it is fair to say that everyone is very happy about that after the winter months we have endured!

Can you believe we are already on month 8 of Art Club themes?!  No, neither can I!

For this month's theme, the lovely Mr Jim Samon has chosen 'Market'.  I'm thinking of all kinds of markets...farmers markets, flower markets, second hand markets, fish markets, french markets, supermarkets, floating markets, foreign markets, the stock market, meat markets (like on a Friday and Saturday night at the discotheque)........so many markets!

Enjoy the theme lovely people and email your submissions by the 19th of October to Chris or myself.

Happy creating!
Gillian x

BOOT SCOOTIN' ALONG BY ISSY ODDIE

Another wonderful art club submission for the Western theme is here and it is the cowgirl who chose the Western theme herself, Miss Issy Oddie!

From Issy...."For some reason as soon as I thought of the theme I got a mental block! So quickly sketched up my boots on Friday night and then etched them and printed them Saturday :)
I love etching!"

Thanks Issy!

SMITH & WESSON BY JENNY SCHWAB

This gorgeous drawing is submitted by Jenny Schwab.....

"This is my Smith & Wesson which until this project I'd always thought was a 'Smith & Western'!"

COWBOY DAD

It didn't take me long to decide the subject of my Western theme...my dad, Mr Dennis Hoodless.
My dad loves Western filrms, so much in fact that the family dog is called Duke (after The Duke, Mr John Wayne).  Not only does he love Western films, he is also from the West coast of Scotland - two very good reasons to choose him!

I had initially thought about making a lino of him as I love lino very much, however, I was so inspired by Issy's etching pieces over the last few months that I thought I would try out etching.

My process was as follows.....

1. Photoshop dad wearing a checked shirt and cowboy hat.  He doesn't actually wear cowboy clothes in real life, but hey, maybe after seeing this project he might consider a new look!  Chris did this part as he is Photoshop genius, I was visual supervisor.
2. Draw dad.  I made this drawing using fine liner on paper.  Lots of cross-hatching.

3. Etch.  I placed a photocopy of the drawing under the clear accetate and scratched into the surface of the accetate using an etching tool.  This is the etching plate after I had printed a few times, and it has kept a bit of the ink in the grooves.

4. Make a print.  I trialled printing with sepia and black inks, which I have photographed for the blog.

Altogether on the floor...
